The capital of Kenya is a thriving, bustling and heady metropolis but the drive to One Forty Eight, a quirky boutique hotel, soon takes you into the tree-lined roads of Karen, one of the city’s most upscale neighbourhoods. Your accommodation borders a wildlife sanctuary and you may be lucky enough to catch a glimpse of a giraffe or warthog from the grounds – what a way to kickstart your African safari!
One Forty Eight is set in shady grounds filled with trees. The main ‘house’ is an old log cabin packed with unusual art that gives it a relaxed feel. There is also a series of suites in another building that are ideal for honeymooners or couples. A hot shower and a delicious dinner await.

After breakfast you will be met and transferred to Wilson Airport where you will catch your flight to the world-famous Masai Mara National Reserve. Once here, you will be transferred to Porini Lion Camp in time for lunch and afternoon tea. Go on a late afternoon nature walk or game drive followed by a sundowner drink and spot-lit night drive before returning to Porini Lion Camp for dinner. The following days are dedicated to exploring the rolling savannahs of the Mara on exciting game drives, either searching for the Wildebeest Migration between about August and November, or the prolific resident game all year round. Find a scenic spot for a delicious picnic lunch and return to camp for nights around the campfire.

Today you will fly to Kogatende Airstrip, from where you will head to Kimondo Migration Camp to begin your thrilling Serengeti experience. Kimondo offers comfortable under-canvas accommodation, and relocates periodically, following the Great Wildebeest Migration as it moves across the Serengeti-Mara ecosystem. Depending on the time of year you will be able to witness the incredible river crossings, calving or rutting stages of the annual cycle. Excellent year-round game viewing allows you to see large numbers of elephant, hippo, zebra and giraffe as well as apex predators including lion, leopard, cheetah and hyena on one of Africa’s most iconic landscapes.

Your Tanzanian journey continues onto one of Africa’s most fascinating landmarks – the game-dense Ngorongoro Crater – en route to Gibb’s Farm, your last accommodation stop. This cosy, homey working farm is on the slopes of the Ngorongoro Conservation Area, making it the perfect place to launch your forays into the Ngorongoro Crater, one of the top places in the world to see the Big 5.
The Crater is an extremely popular safari destination because the huge number of animals makes it easy to spot them, especially since the crater walls keep them contained in a landscape of fertile grazing, springs and wetlands.
After a full-day in the Crater, return to Gibb’s Farm to take advantage of the spa for a soothing massage – sometimes essential after the bumpy roads of a game drive! – or to simply unwind and birdwatch in their exquisite gardens.
